Indy fights for diversity...

What can I say? My state shocks me at times... here is an example.

The Indianapolis Police and Fire departments employ more blacks and women than they did 30 years ago, but Mayor Bart Peterson's administration says there's still a lot of room for improvement.

That's why the city will fight a move by the Justice Department to end 27 years of federal monitoring of hires and promotions.

"We don't think we've arrived," Kobi M. Wright, the city of Indianapolis' top lawyer, said.

The Justice Department acknowledges the diversity of Indianapolis' Police and Fire departments falls short of reflecting the community's work force. But the agency says Indianapolis has largely removed vestiges of race and gender discrimination that existed in the late 1970s when consent decrees were entered into, forcing reforms in both departments.
I think Indy would do alright without monitoring, but I am more than suprised that Indy is fighting to keep it.
